WINAKWA ADULT SLO-PITCH RULES FOR 2017

Women must be a minimum of 25 years of age, men must be at least 30 as of January 1st of the calendar year for which they are signing up to play. All players must have a current Winakwa C.C. booster card and reside within the club’s boundaries. Players that live outside the club’s boundaries, but that have played in the league for at least ten (10) consecutive years, are considered grandfathered players, and as such are eligible to play in the league.

Teams must consist of 5 males and 5 females. In the event that players are not available, players from a team can be borrowed from another team or if players cannot be borrowed from other teams, the following rules will apply:

1. This is a FUN LEAGUE!!! Play safely and use common sense.

2. If only 4 players of one sex are present, then the team must play 5 and 4, rotating the batters, without being penalized with an out for missing 10th player.

3. If 8 or less players show up to a game, if requested by the team with the shortage of players, the opposition MUST SUPPLY A CATCHER. The catcher would only occupy the position while his/her team is at bats and would not bat for the opposition. The catcher would bat in rotation for his/her team as well as occupying a position when his/her team took to the field. Therefore, the catcher could be several different players.

4. A female MUST play either 1st base or catcher (or both). Male players cannot occupy the positions of 1st base and pitcher at the same time. Nor can a team have a male play short stop and 2nd base at the same time. Male players cannot occupy more than 2 infield positions and they cannot play side by side.

5. All defensive players must play outside the baseline until the batter makes contact with the ball

6. Baserunners cannot leave the base until the batter makes contact with the ball. Any baserunner whose foot loses contact with the base before the batter makes contact with the ball is out (whether accidental or not). Players are on the honour system. Own up to your mistake – hang your head and walk off the diamond to your dugout. We’ve all done it at least once.

7. Blocking the base and/or standing on the base line is not allowed. If there is a play on that base, the runner is safe.

8. On an overthrow to 1st or 3rd (where the ball goes out of bounds), the baserunners will get the base they are going to, plus one more base. Players are reminded that the ball is still in play if it stays within the fence (fence line) i.e.: Maginot North.

9. For safety reasons, all baserunners must run completely behind homeplate or will be automatically out. Catchers must move to the front of the plate when there are baserunners. Baserunners touching or jumping over home plate at any time will be automatically out. The safe line at home plate is an extension of the first base line for baserunners.

10. The catcher must make the initial play on a throw home. An infielder or pitcher can ONLY back-up the catcher and NOT make the play at home plate or baserunner will be safe.

11. All pitches must have an arc of a minimum of 8 feet and maximum of 16 feet. A “No Pitch” should be called before the ball crosses or hits home plate. It is a dead ball and counts as a ball in the ball/strike count. If the batter hits the ball on a “No Pitch” it is considered a dead ball and baserunners must return to their base.

12. There is NO “infield fly rule.” Players are reminded of rule #1 and no one shall drop the ball deliberately.

13. If the batter has 2 strikes and hits a foul ball, he/she is OUT.

14. No sliding; sliding is an automatic out. Falling back to the base is NOT to be considered a slide.

15. Bunting is not allowed.

16. The distance between bases shall be 60 feet and the distance from home plate to the pitcher’s mound shall be 50 feet.

17. A commitment line shall be made 20 feet from home plate. If, while trying to run home the baserunner crosses that line, he/she cannot go back to 3rd.

18. Substituting players can only be made after 4 innings with exceptions for an injured player, or if a team has more than 10 players of the same sex or unless agreed to by the opposing team.

19. Hard ball bats are not allowed.

20. All regular season games are 8 innings in length or use discretion when dark.

21. Visibly intoxicated players will not be permitted to play. This rule will be enforced by the 2 captains and umpire, majority rules. No alcohol permitted on or near the playing field.

22. No smoking permitted on the diamond by any players. This rule also applies to umpires and base coaches.

23. Only team captains or designate may approach the umpire in the event of any discrepancy.

24. All players play at their own risk. The City of Winnipeg, Winakwa Community Centre, the league, executive and/or captains will not be held responsible.

25. Every player that shows up and is willing and able to play will play a minimum of ½ a game unless the team has more than 10 males/females or the opposing team agrees to a player playing less than 4 innings.

26. Pinch runners will only be allowed once the batter has arrived safely at first. A player that continues on to 2nd base cannot have a pinch runner for that turn at bat.

27. When playing at Prendergast, if the ball is hit to right field, it is playable off the wall, but is a ground rule double if it is hit between wall of the building and Autumnwood.

28. To be eligible to play in the fall tournament, each player must play in a minimum of 5 regular season games. Appeals are at the discretion of the executive in consultation with the team captain and the affected player(s).

29. An inning ends once five (5) runs have been scored regardless of the # of outs. The exception is the last inning in which three (3) outs must be made.
